HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER APE-301 3(3+0+0)
Introductory concepts on conduction, convection and radiation. Conduction; Fourier's law, thermal conductivity dependence on temperature and pressure in fluids, general conduction equation under unsteady state, heat conduction through composite walls, optimum thickness of insulation. Transient numerical method for unsteady state conduction in simple geometrically shapes e.g. slab, cylinder and sphere.
Convection: Free and forced convection: Newton's law of cooling, film coefficient, correlation of Nusselt number, Prandt number and Reynolds number, Empirical and practical relations for forced convention, condensation and boiling. Study on a specific problem in Agricultural Engineering Planning, design, development, fabrication, testing, evaluation and analysis of parameters. The study will vary according to the type of the project. Each candidate is required to prepare and submit monthly progress reports and report on the project work at the end of each semester.
At the end of the study in the 8th semester a comprehensive final report of full study is to be prepared by each student and to be submitted by a specified date at the end of the 8th semester.
Each student will be assigned a project. He will be graded on the basis of the project report and viva-voce on the project work by internal and external examiners.

After 6th semester i.e. in the final year there will be a study tour for 3 weeks during which students will visit places of agricultural engineering interest such as irrigation projects, manufacturing industries, agricultural processing and food industries and research institutions.
